Someonesays, Time is money, but I think time isimportant than money. Why? Because when money is spent, we can get it back. However, when time is, itll never. That iswe must not waste time. It goes without saying thattheisusually limited. Ever a second is very important. We should make full use of our time touseful.

But it is a pity that there are a lot of people who do not know the importance of the time. They spent their limited time smoking, drinking and. They do not know that wasting time means wasting part of their own.

In a word, we should save time. We shouldnttodays work for tomorrow. Remember we have no time to.

Thereare advantages and disadvantages toAsian and Western educational methods. For example, one advantagethe education in Japan is that students there learn much more math and scienceAmerican students. They also study more hours each day than Americans. The study is difficult, but itstudents for a society that values disciplineand self-control. There is, however, a disadvantage. Memorization is an important learning method in Japanese schools, many students say that after an exam, they forget much of the information that they have memorized.

The advantage to the education in North America, the other hand, is that students learn to think by themselves. The system prepares them for a society that valuesideas. There is, however, a disadvantage. When students graduate from high school, they havent memorized

manybasic rules and facts as students in other countries.

JulesVernes most famous book is Twenty Thousand Leagues under the Sea. (Aleague is an old wordabout three miles.) In those days submarines (潜水艇) had not been, but he describes an underwater ship very like a modern submarine. Thecaptain of the submarine, called Captain Nemo, and his men havemany strange adventures and find many strange things

thebottom of the ocean. He was a very good. His characters often did surprising and sometimes impossible things, but they always seemedreal people.

In another book,Around the World in Eighty Days, Jules Verne creates Mr. Fogg, the hero, made a bet that he would travel around the world in eighty days. Nowadays this may seemto you, but in those days there were no planes or even cars. Mr. Fogg and his servant traveled in many different, even on an elephant at one time! If you want to know their result, you should read the book.

In all his books Jules Verne used his scientific knowledgehis imagination in describing future inventions.hewas wrong, of course, but often the accuracy of his descriptions is very clever.

Passage6

In the last 500 years, nothing about people not their clothes, ideas, or languages has changed as much as what they eat. The original chocolate drink was made from the seeds of the cocoa tree by South American Indians. The Spanish introduced it to the rest of the world during the 1500s. And although it was very expensive, it quickly became fashionable. In London shops where chocolate drinks were served became important meeting places. Some still exist today.

The potato is also from the New World. Around 1600, the Spanish brought it from Peru to Europe, where it soon was widely grown. Ireland became so dependent on it that thousands of Irish people starved when the crop failed during the Potato Famine of 1845-6, and thousands more were forced toemigrateto America.

There are many other foods that have traveled from South America to the Old World. But some others went in the opposite direction. Brazil is now the Worlds largest grower of coffee, and coffee is an important crop in Colombia and other South American countries. But it is native to Ethiopia. It was first made into a drink by Arabs during the 1400s.

According to an Arabic legend, coffee was discovered when a goatherd name Kaldi noticed that his goats were attracted to the red berries on a coffee bush. He tried one and experienced the wide-awake feeling that one-third of the worlds population now starts the day with.

Passage1

Each day, computers help millions of people do their jobs more effectively. For example, they can help mangers decide on a future course of action, and they can then help with the follow-up checks on performance to see if planned goals are being achieved. By using accurate and timely facts supplied by data base management software, a manger can do a better job of identifying problems and opportunities. The facts retrieved by such software can then be manipulated by a spreadsheet package to help the manger plan to alternate courses of action. And mangers may not need to spend as much time in controlling when a computer can respond with a triggered report if actual performance varies from what was planned. The time saved in controlling may allow mangers to give more attention to employees concerns, and this, in turn, may result in improved morale.

But employment benefits certainly arent restricted to mangers. Healthcare researchers and other scientists also use computers to conduct research into complex problem areas that couldnt otherwise be studied. Lawyers use online legal data banks to locate precedent cases in order to serve clients better. Salespeople can receive more timely information about products in stock, can promise customers that their sales orders will be handled promptly, and can thus improve their sales performance because of the computer system. And the job duties of some office and factory workers have changed from routine, repetitive operations to more varied and appealing tasks through computer usage. For example, office workers who understand text processing, computing, and data communication usually have vital roles and are given critical office functions to perform.

106Which of the following examples shows the controlling function of a computer?0.4 分)

Passage4

People all over the world today are beginning to hear and learn more and more about the problem of pollution. Pollution is caused either by mans release of completely new and often artificial (人造的) substances into the environment, or by releasing greatly increased amounts of a natural substance (物质),such as oil from oil tankers into the sea.

Whateveritsunderlying reasons, there is no doubt that much of the pollution caused could be controlled if only companies, individuals and governments would make more efforts. In the home there is an obvious need to control litter and waste. Food comes wrapped up three of four times in packages that all have to be disposed of; drinks are increasingly sold in bottles or tins which cant be reused. This not only causes a litter problem, but also is a great waste of resources, in terms of glass, metal and paper. Advertising has helped this process by persuading many of us not only to buy things we neither want nor need, but also to throw away much of what we do buy. Pollution and waste combine to be a problem everyone can help to solve by cutting out unnecessary buying, excess use and careless disposal (处理) of the products we use in our daily lives.

111The main cause of pollution is ______.0.4 分)

A

the release of artificial or natural substances into the environment

B

increased amounts of a natural substance

C

the production of new industrial goods

D

our ever-increasing population

112Much of the pollution could be controlled if only ______.0.4 分)

A

people would pay more attention to the problem

B

all sides concerned would make more efforts

C

governments would take effective measures

D

farmers would use less artificial fertilizers

113Food packages, bottles and tins for drinks can cause______.0.4 分)

both a litter problem and a waster of resources

C

D

114Which of the following can not help solving the problem of pollution?0.4 分)

An Extraordinary Change of Direction

Molly Wilson had been a dancer and a mother for many years when she decided to sail round the world to raise money for charity.

As a child she had trained as a ballet dancer, but at 15 she had grown too tall for classical ballet, so she became a member of a pop dance team.

She got married, and after she had children she retired from show business to bring them up. They grew up, and when they were 18 they left home.

She says, When I decided to do the round-the-world race, my husband thought I was bored because the children had left home. He was also worried because I had never sailed before. I was not bored, but I had met some people who told me about the race.

They had taken part in it, but they had only done one section, say, from New Zealand to Australia. I wanted to do the whole ten-month journey.

Before Molly left she did a lot of training, but it hadnt prepared her for the worst weather which they experienced. She tells one story. One night the sea was very rough and it was very cold. I had gone downstairs when a huge wave smashed into the boat and injured two men on the deck. One of the men couldnt move because he had broken his leg. They were taken to hospital by helicopter. That was the worst time.

By the end of October last year, she had raised more than £50,000 for charity.

She says, Sometimes I ask myself, whatdid I do? How did I do it? But then I think, its the same as being a dancer. Before I left on the trip, I had trained hard. I had got very fit and had prepared myself completely. Then on the trip I was simply a good team member.

Passage10

Why is it that the more connected we get, the more disconnected I feel? Every advance in communication technology is a step back from the closeness of human interaction. With e-mail and instant messaging over the Internet, we can communicate without seeing or talking to one another. With voice mail, you can conduct entire conversations without ever reaching anyone. If my mom has a question, I just leave the answer on her machine.

As almost every imaginable contact between human beings becomes automatic by machine, the alienation quotient goes up. You cant even call a person to get the phone number of another person anywhere. Directory assistance is almost always fully automatic by machine. Pumping gas at the station? Why say good-morning to the worker when you swipe(刷卡)your credit card at the pump and save yourself the bother of human contact? Placing money at the bank? talkto a clerk who might live in the neighborhood when can just put your credit card into the ATM?

Pretty soon you wont have the hard task of making eye contact at the grocery store. Some grocery chains are usually a self-scanner so you can check yourself out, avoiding those annoying clerks who look at you and ask how you are doing?

Passage5

Thousands of years ago, in the middle of an ocean, miles from the nearest island, an undersea volcano broke out. The hot liquid piled higher and higher and spread wider and wider. In this way, an island rose up in the sea.

As time went on, hot sun and cool rains made the rock split and break to pieces. Sea waves dashed against the rock. In this way, soil and sand came into being.

Nothing lived on the naked soil. And then the wind and birds brought plant seeds, spiders and other little creatures there. Only plants could grow first. Only they, in sunlight, could produce food from the minerals of the soil, water and air. While many animals landed on the island, they could find no food.
