Part One Reading(15points)

Singaporeans are generally very formal when it comes to introductions. The elders or people of the highest status introduce themselves first. The standard greeting is a firm handshake. You may notice that Malay Singaporeans greet each other with a handshake before briefly placing their palms over their own hearts. This is a cultural greeting that you aren't expected to emulate if you're not of Malay heritage.

It's hard to figure out all the complicated introductions in Singapore. The best thing to do is to wait and see what the other person does, and then follow suit. The same is true of names. Chinese, Malays and Indians have different types of names and sometimes it can be confusing. Different ethnic groups also have their own ways of addressing each other. Malays or Indians might introduce themselves by their first name and then follow it with their professional title. When in doubt, politely ask the person how they like to be addressed.

In Singapore, business appointments should be made at least two weeks in advance. It is better to send a list of the names and the titles of those who will be participating in the meeting. Also, as mentioned before, it's important to be punctual.

Singaporeans love to bargain, but this does not mean that it's polite to raise your voice to bargain. For Singaporeans, business negotiations are a slow, deliberate process that allows the relationship to develop. It's important not to lose patience when working out the details of a business arrangement. Anyone who displays anger or impatience during the negotiation in Singapore risks being judged as unworthy of respect and trust.

Throughout the negotiation process, you should show respect to the elders and the top management, as status and rank are very important. You should also realise that business decisions are usually made by consensus because the interests of the group are more important than those of the individual.

Influenced by the Asian philosophy of building good relationships before doing business, Singaporean business people tend to be cautious about personal relationships and like to make sure they are doing business with the right people. Therefore, you should try to establish a good and sincere relationship with Singaporeans to prove your competence and good character.

TO: Jay S. Jacobs, VP Human Resources

Sue Simmons and I, along with other Intereontinental Bank employees, have been eager to return to college, but we can't afford the costs of tuition and books.

Many of us were forced to go to work before we could complete our college degrees. We know that the continuing education divisions of some universities provide good courses that we could take at night. Sue and I- and we think many other employees as well-would like to enroll for these courses. Would Intercontinental be interested in helping us with a tuitionreimbursement program?

We've heard about other local companies (Bank of America,First Federal,GE and others that offer reimbursement for fees and books when employees complete approved courses with a C or higher. Sue and I have collected information, including a newspaper clipping that we're enclosing. Surveys show that tuition-reimbursement programs help improve employee morale and loyalty. They also result in higher productivity because employees developed improved skills.

We'd like a chance to talk over this worthwhile employee program with you at your convenience.

Sue and Marty
